The Eye Institute of West Florida is one of the largest multi-specialty ophthalmology practices in the country. Founded by Stephen M. Weinstock, M.D., FACS in 1974, what began as a one-physician practice is now home to 28 physicians, with six offices across the Tampa Bay area.
The Eye Institute has been caring for people in Tampa Bay for almost 45 years, guided by a single vision: providing expert eye care for any eye disease with the focus always being on the patient. This summer, the practice expanded their reach of multi-specialty ophthalmic care, opening their sixth office, located in North Tampa.
“We are proud to expand our mission of providing comprehensive, sub-specialty eye care to Tampa Bay by adding another convenient location for our patients, now open in Westchase, FL,” said Dr. Weinstock. “When I began practicing, I strived to provide the highest level of eye care in a safe and caring environment. I am proud that over the many years, after adding more physicians and offices to our practice, this guiding mission has only become stronger,” Dr. Weinstock adds.
The physicians at The Eye Institute of West Florida are accomplished ophthalmologists with subspecialty training in all major areas of ophthalmology, including cataracts; refractive treatments, such as LASIK, Clear Lens Exchange or Raindrop Corneal Inlay to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses to see well; glaucoma; retinal diseases, including macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy; and oculoplastic procedures, such as blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery. Each specialist is an ophthalmologist (medical eye doctor) who has completed additional fellowship training for surgery related to a specific ocular disease or condition, making them an expert in that area of ophthalmology.
Along with the practice’s new square foot Westchase office, they are pleased to introduce three new physicians who will practice out of this office, providing multi-specialty care for the North Tampa region.
Sandra M. Johnson, M.D. and Steven E. Kane, M.D. are currently accepting new patients. Along with these three physicians who recently joined The Eye Institute of West Florida, Janie Ho, M.D., a retina specialist who joined the practice in 2016, is also accepting new patients in the Westchase office.
Dr. Sandra Johnson brings almost 30 years of experience to The Eye Institute. Most recently, she served as a glaucoma specialist at the University of Virginia Health System Department of Ophthalmology. After receiving her Medical Degree from Boston University, she completed a fellowship in the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Johnson joins Dr. Jeffrey Schwartz, Dr. Kevin Greenidge and Dr. Nora Cothran to provide comprehensive care for patients with mild to severe glaucoma.
Following medical school at Jefferson Medical College, Dr. Steven Kane continued his training with a two-year post-residency fellowship in diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the cornea. He completed his fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in June 2017 and joined The Eye Institute of West Florida. Along with Dr. Neel Desai, Dr. Kane is accepting new patients for diseases related to the cornea, such as keratoconus.
Dr. Janie Ho joined Dr. Leonard Kirsch and Dr. Richard Hairston in 2016 to provide patients of The Eye Institute with exceptional care for diseases of the retina. Her experience in the most advanced diagnostic and treatment techniques of all diseases of the retina, macula and vitreous, including the use of Eylea©, Lucentis© and Avastin©, make Dr. Ho an expert in her field. Over the last ten years, she has been providing her retinal expertise to communities in the greater Boston area. She is accepting patients at our South Tampa, Clearwater and Westchase offices.
The Eye Institute of West Florida is internationally recognized as one of the few practices in the country to house the most advanced, state-of-the-art equipment and techniques available. Dr. Robert Weinstock, Director of Cataract and Refractive Services explains that, “our practice is devoted to providing the best, most advanced treatment options to our patients. To truly provide the highest level of care possible, we must stay at the forefront of advancements happening within eye care. Our team is constantly working to improve through continued education, training and of course housing the most advanced technology available.” He adds that, “part of ensuring exceptional care is having conveniently located offices for our patients without compromising the level of care provided.”
The Eye Institute has additional offices located in South Tampa, Clearwater, St. Petersburg and Largo, which is home to the Largo Ambulatory Surgery Center.
The Eye Institute’s Westchase office is located at 11925 Sheldon Road, Tampa, FL 33626. To schedule an appointment, patients can call (813) 792-0444.
