Stephen M. Weinstock, M.D., FACS founded The Eye Institute of West Florida in Largo, Florida in 1974. Dr. Weinstock originally envisioned being a pediatric ophthalmologist but quickly realized the need for adult eye care in the Tampa Bay area. He began seeing patients for their general ophthalmic care. After treating patients for a variety of diseases of the eyes he had another vision: to create an ophthalmic practice consisting of specialty trained physicians focusing on diagnosing and treating a specific type of eye disease, making them an expert in that field of ophthalmology.
Dr. Weinstock trained to become a cataract specialist, soon adding Jeffrey Schwartz, M.D., to the practice. Dr. Schwartz became the first full-time glaucoma specialist in Pinellas County. Over the more than forty years as a sub-specialty ophthalmic practice, The Eye Institute of West Florida has added more board-certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologists and optometrists. The Eye Institute of West Florida currently has three cataract and refractive specialists, one corneal and ocular surface disease specialist, three glaucoma specialists, two retina/vitreous specialists, one oculoplastic specialist, three general ophthalmologist, eight optometric physicians, one bariatric physician and two physician assistants.
