Dr. Steven Kane, one of The Eye Institute of West Florida’s premier Cornea Specialists, teamed up with the Lion’s Eye Institute for a teaching conference in Mexico last winter.
During the “Curso Internacional de Cornea y Cirugía Refractiva” or “International Course of Cornea and Refractive Surgery, Dr. Kane along with colleague Dr. Ben Lambright taught Dr. Hector Camera how to perform the first DMEK cornea transplant in the state of Yucatán in Mexico.
Dr. Kane and the Lion’s Eye Institute team taught dozens of South American Cornea Specialists on how to perform DMEK and DSAEK endothelial surgery with lectures and hands-on wet labs.
To put it simply, endothelial transplant surgery involves replacing a patient’s diseased cornea tissue with healthy, donor eye tissue. These procedures offer life-changing results for patients who suffer from degenerative eye disorders such as Fuchs’ dystrophy.
More About Enthothelial Surgery
DMEK (Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty) and DSAEK (Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty) are the most advanced, cutting edge treatments for patients with corneal edema and Fuchs’ dystrophy. Both involve replacing the layer of dysfunctional cells in the cornea with a new donor layer of cells.
