Dr. Magda Barsoum-Homsy, pediatric ophthalmologist, is a specialist at diagnosing and treating children’s diseases and disorders. Some adults present similar disorders as children and are best treated by a pediatric ophthalmologist. We recommend that children receive their first eye exam by age 3. Developmental eye problems must be diagnosed and treated before age 5 to have any chance of full recovery.

Dr. Barsoum-Homsy is a fellowship-trained, board-certified ophthalmologist strictly specializing in adult & pediatric strabismus, pediatric cataract and glaucoma surgery. She is recognized throughout the country and internationally for her contributions towards the discovery of the Primary Congenital Glaucoma Gene. She joined The Eye Institute of West Florida in 1998.

Many common diseases and disorders:

Pediatric Eyecare
  • Strabismus (eye muscle problems)
  • Amblyopia (lazy eye)
  • Cataract and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation
  • Eye infections and pink eye in children
  • Eye problems associated with systemic disorders
  • Refractive errors (myopia, hypermetropia, astigmatism)
  • Glaucoma – congenital and juvenile
  • Tearing in infants
  • Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP)

Strabismus

Pediatric EyecareStrabismus is an eye muscle coordination issue stemming from either an extraocular muscle or brain disorder. Eyes that do not align with one another while focusing on the same point in space are an indication of strabismus. As a result, patients are not able to achieve binocular vision which may result in poor depth perception and/or double vision.

Typically many infants are born with misaligned eyes. But it’s not until after 6 months of age that a physician may diagnose congenital strabismus. Some children recover pathologically by age 10. If diagnosed and treated early, children have a better prognosis of achieving normal vision without the aid of glasses or prisms. Otherwise, left untreated, the strabismic eye runs a higher risk of amblyopia – a permanent condition where the brain ignores images from the deviated eye (lazy eye).

At The Eye Institute of West Florida we treat children and adults individually with the care and attention they need to achieve better vision results.
